CDC Warns of Coronavirus Pandemic: What Should NM Expect?

In the year 1820, Cholera killed over 250,000 people.  In 1920 the Spanish Flu killed up to 100 million people.  Now, in the year 2020 we have the Coronavirus.  Are we about to experience another viral pandemic the likes of which the world has never seen?

“Now is the time for businesses, hospitals, communities, schools and everyday people to begin preparing,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier said today in a news conference regarding the highly contagious Coronavirus.

“We are asking the American public to work with us to prepare for the expectation that this could be bad.”

Dr. Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, outlines exactly what American citizens should do to avoid contracting or spreading the virus.  The steps include switching business meeting to online-calls, dividing schools into smaller groups, and “modifying, postponing or cancelling mass gatherings.

“Fourteen cases have been diagnosed in the United States, in addition to 39 cases among repatriated persons from high-risk settings, for a current total of 53 cases within the United States.” according to the February 25th CDC Coronavirus health update.

The Coronavirus has proven to be one of the most contagious viral outbreaks in history according to epidemiologist Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding, but what should New Mexicans expect from this potential epidemic?

New Mexico has much less worldwide travel compared to other states in the U.S., so even though the Coronavirus is highly contagious, your chances of contacting an infected person in New Mexico are low at this time.

One thing New Mexicans should be warned of, however, is the unusually long period in which infected people appear to be healthy; showing no symptoms of the Coronavirus while infecting anybody they come in contact with.

The CDC recommends cleaning surfaces regularly in homes, schools, offices, and other public spaces.  ELC recommends that you stock up on food, water, and supplies just in case we are on the brink of a world-ending pandemic.  You can never be too safe ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
